Just a point of interest. A couple of weeks back after catching nothing all day my five year old son wanted to put bubble gum on his hook . Well it worked like crazy. Half a dozen decent carp in 20 minutes. the same gum stayed on the hook and sure enough next time we fished it worked again.

Well I don’t think I can beat bubble gum. I’ve never tried that. I usually fish on the Susquehanna which is fished pretty heavily. I just sit on shore and put a big ol’ night crawler on a medium sized hook. Plus I use a weight to run the line through. One that will stay on the bottom. Then you put a small split shot on the line between the hook and the weight.
Therefore, you can cast out into the deeper water and let the rig sit. When the fish hits the bait, the pole will begin to bob. Plus with the line going through the weight, the fish wont spit out the hook. Gives you more time to set the hook. Make sure the fish has ahold and give it a yank! You need to reel the line taunt and set it alittle harder to make up for any slack.
