Course fishing again after 25 years.?
I loved course fishing as a teenager but since moving to north Scotland I have never been able to do this type of fishing. Now I have discovered a place not far from my home where they stock course fish and am really excited…however I have no kit. I remember I used to own a mitchell reel and had a really long shakespeare rod…..do they still use the long rods for course fishing ? Could someone give me a basic check list of what I will need. I looked on ebay and you can get 3M telescopic rods for quite cheap.
Thanks in advance and I look forward to your advice
Andy
if you want to go course fishing you need to know what sort of fish you want to go for if you just want small fish like (roach rudd perch etc) go for a float rod 12 ft or a pole about 12 m or more also a quiver tip rod would be handy as well this need’s to be between 10ft and 12 ft long go for a shimano reel and 5 pound line you will be able to buy hook length’s with a low bracking strain which will come in handy, Size hooks bewteen size 18 and size 10 will be about right. size your need. make of the rod not that inportant. if you are going for carp or pike then if i was you go for a Fox rod or a Daiwa rod as thay are high quarity rod and you will need them. Again a shimano reel’s and 12 pound line. the hook size’s you will need are a lot bigger size 8 to size 2 will do the job and the make matter’s to go for ESP hooks if you can get them if not try for fox hooks thay are the best at the moment
hope this help you and good luck

dont bother with a telescopic rod they are awful, get a rod about 7ft, and a shakespeare course reel, use line about 12lb breaking strain and probably hooks around size 12 or 14, if in doubt consult your local tackle dealer.

Coarse fishing has changed a great deal in the last 25 years. I would recommend you buy an up to date book eg. John Wilson (author) before you lay out your cash. You may be interested in fly fishing – many instructors in Scotland.
PS coArse fishing refers to freshwater fishing excluding game fish.

yes i have 22 years of fishing under my belt
I guess you classify carp as being a coarse fish? That is what I call them here in the US
I use a 6 foot spinning reel with a good drag, a size 1 octupus hook and 8 pound test berkely low visability green line. and a bread doughball with no sinker. I just cast it out let the bait sit and let the carp run with it .
Here is a picture my rig from a couple days ago, my rod , reel, and a carp

I use lightweight rods and reels for the fight of the carp that makes it challenging. But I really need a 7 foot heavy action rod for the big ones and maybe 12 to 14 pound test on a good spinning reel.

Try to steer clear of telescopic rods, they aren’t half as sensitive as say a quiver tip or float rod.
You’ll need :
13ft light quiver tip rod (shakespear, daiwa, shimano)
small match reel loaded with 6lb monofilament line
pan net + net handle
bank sticks for putting your rod on
keep net
tackle box
bait tubs
split shot, small bombs (weights), small floats, hook to nylon (sizes 16,18,20), disgorgers, small swivels, scissors (saves using your teeth)
Seat
Umbrella
DO NOT GET A 7 FOOT ROD LIKE SOME PEOPLE SAY ON HERE. for fishing in the UK you’ll need a nice 13ft rod.
Try to keep things simple, keep feeding maggots little and often to keep the fish going all day. Or try feeder fishing with groundbait and double maggot on a size 16 hook.
Hope this helps ?
