Fishing Gear Help Please – xmas present?

It depends how serious of a fisherman he is. If he’s very serious, then a better gift might be to get him baits instead of a rod. I know when I get a new rod I always prefer to feel it in the store to know how it will react. With your limited knowledge it might be difficult to get him the exact rod he wants.
But if you’re going to get him a rod he will love, make it a St. Croix. Expensive, but the best their is. Probably a 6′ med-heavy/heavy action would be best for your kind of fishing mentioned.

go to walmart and look for shakespeare. they are alright reels and average poles. it should be aroung 35$ and then walmart has hooks and everything for cheap. good luck

Being as he’s new to fishing, I would get him a spinning outfit. They’re the easiest to learn on.

I’d look at a 7 foot, more or less, medium to light action rod, and a reel to balance with it, filled with 10-pound line. If you can’t find a kit that meets these requirements, just tell the tackle shop salesman what you’re looking for and why. He’ll fix you up.

While you’re at it, get some hooks, sinkers, and a selection of lures to get him started.

A 7′, 2 piece, spinning outfit would be your best bet. DON’T purchase a telescopic rod! They have a tendency to break at the WORST times; like when you have the "fish of a lifetime" hooked up! Stay away from Telescopic rods they are the…..uh…..K-mart brand "Tube-top" of the fishing world! (lol-it’s true!)

Here are some brands you want to look for: Shimano, Daiwa, Pflueger.

Budget Spinning Outfit’s

1. "Pflueger, President" spinning reel ($59.99) model 6735X matched to a 7′, medium-action, "Ugly Stik Lite", ($39.99). You can catch most any freshwater fish with this combo. Ugly Stik rods work well as a "begginer rod" because of the outstanding durability; however, they lack "sensitivity" which can be VERY important in Bass & Trout fishing.

Pflueger President reels are excellent entry level reels and have more features (and are "smoother") than reels twice as expensive!

2. "Shimano, Symetre" spinning reel ($59.99) model SY1500FI matched to a "Shimano, Compre" 6′ 6", model CPS-66M 2B, rod ($89). Another budget rod & reel combo that can catch all that you’ve requested to catch. Symetre reels are a bargain at $59, (they only recently dropped the price from $79 like 3 weeks ago!!!), but, I still think the Plfueger President is still "slightly" better.

You CAN get a cheaper combo, but the odds your gonna get a "lemon" raise significantly when you shop for a fishing outfit below the price tag of these 2 combo’s I’ve listed, (around $100). Be careful!

These are some of the finest rods & reels you can purchase. And believe it or not, there ARE some even MORE expensive. But, as a begginer, anything over these would be "overkill".

PS- As for lures and terminal tackle- I’d "hold off" on buying any tackle. You don’t really know what type of fish he wants to target and each fish has different "stuff" you could purchase. You could spend FAR MORE on lures to fill up a tackle box than any 1 fishing outfit, (esp if he decides to strictly go the Bass/Pike/Trout direction)!

HOWEVER, due get him some line. Suggestions?

don’t go for telescopic rods for a start, stick to the usual 3 piece rods and i think he would prefer freshwater fishing rather than sea. you would be better of getting a couple of dvds on fishing and let him make his own mind up. diawa,drennan , silstar,maver,shakespear are all good makes to start with.

if you buy your boyfriend a rod and reel combo go for a small shimano bait runner and a 1.1/2 pound test curve rod to start with this combo will take on most types of fish from small carp to large pike its a very versatile combo and all you need then is a good reel line like maxima if he wants to catch predators then buy him a few spinners and plugs a pair of artery forceps a landing net and some wire traces that will get him started hope this helps

Leats firat keep it simple and inexpensive since he just may not like it.Go to Walmart or a place like that and get a medium action rod that uses ,say, 4 to 10 lb. test fish line. Make sure that it has an eye (guide) for each foot of the rod. If it is a 6 foot rod count the guides including the tip guide and you should have at least 6. The stores normally have the matching rods and reels already put together. Most rods like this are about $25.00. They are not the best but they are adiquite for beginners and they do have faily good drags on the reels. (make sure he learns how to use the drag!) I would suggest either 6 or 8 lb. test line.
You can get takle boxes at fairly good prices. Try one with maybe two trays and as he aquires more takle he can get bigger takle boxes. I, myself, have about 6 boxes for different types of fishing, one for trout,one for bass, one for shallow water salt water, one for deep water salt water, Jigs and one for Marlin and such. (yes, I am a fanatic!)
My fishing tackle is worth more then my truck!
Get him some hooks, snelled of varous sizes and treble hooks. Also snap swivels and sinkers of verious sizes and a few bobbers.
Talk to the salesman at the store about the type of fishing your boyfriend may be doing and they can offer more advise.
I wouldn’t go with a telescopic rod, they have a tendancy of flying apart when you cast. They do make a multiple piece rod, say 4 pieces for easy storage and backpacking. They are stiff though.
Tell him that siminars are offered through many sporting good stores and fishing clubs are a great place to meet other fishing fishinados and they are happy to teach.
