Always have problems, so what is the best knot to use?

You really should learn a range of knots, as there are many special applications.

But day-in and day-out, if you had to be confined to just one knot, the double improved clinch knot serves multiple functions.

Berkley grabbed hold of that knot, after I taught it to one of their representatives many years ago, and promoted it as the Trilene knot. You’ll probably find instructions for tying it under that name.

Keep in mind that any of the clinch knots are fine for tying line to something else—like a fish hook. But they aren’t the best choice for tying line to line.

As far as knots go, there are different knots for different applications.
For tying on a hook, the Improved Clinch Knot has my vote, others may say the Palomar Knot is best but it’s a personal preference type of thing.
For joining two similar diameter lines, the Blood Knot is the best choice
For tying lines of different diameters together, the Albright Knot gets my vote because I find it much easier to tie than the nail knot.
As you can see there are different knots for different purposes. The knot I tie the most though is the Improved Clinch Knot. That would be my all-around choice.

I find that the simple clinch is all i need fishing for steelheads, salmon, pike and musky. It always holds, is easy to tie and it’s very strong with no problems.

The improved clinch knot is one of the best multipurpose knots that there is. I sometimes have trouble getting the line to go through the right hole, but that’s because i have 5 thumbs. Another good knot is the rapala knot. It is good for swimbaits because it allows them to move freely.
